The Telephone

The telephone converts speech into an electrical signal, carries it along a wire, and converts it back into sound at the receiving end, allowing two people to hold a live conversation across a distance. Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the master patent for it on March 7, 1876, after filing an application that reached the United States Patent Office hours ahead of a rival caveat filed by Elisha Gray describing a similar device, a coincidence that triggered decades of litigation. Antonio Meucci had already demonstrated a voice-transmitting device in New York in the 1850s and 1860s but never had the funds to complete a full patent, and in 2002 the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring his work without disturbing Bell's patent.

Facts
Patent or First-Use Date
1876-03-07 1
US Patent 174,465, granted to Alexander Graham Bell, March 7, 1876.
Significance
The telephone made instantaneous two way voice conversation possible across any distance a wire could reach, reshaped business, journalism and personal life around the expectation of immediate contact, and became the direct ancestor of the switched networks that carry data as well as voice today. 1

Year
1876
1876 is the year of Bell's patent grant, the conventional founding date; Meucci's own device predates it by roughly two decades, and Gray filed his competing caveat the same day Bell's application arrived at the patent office.

Held Differently

Antonio Meucci, Engineers

Why this is disputed. Meucci demonstrated working voice-transmission devices roughly two decades before Bell's 1876 patent but lacked the funds to complete and maintain a full patent; the 2002 US House resolution recognized his work without legally disturbing Bell's patent.

Elisha Gray, Engineers

Why this is disputed. Gray's February 14, 1876 caveat described a similar voice-transmission method filed the same day as Bell's application; the United States Patent Office and later courts upheld Bell's patent, but the question of who reached the idea first has never been settled to universal satisfaction.

Invented By: Antonio Meucci

Antonio Meucci demonstrated working voice-transmission devices in New York in the 1850s and 1860s, roughly two decades before Alexander Graham Bell's 1876 patent, and set up an agreement in December 1871 with associates including the Italian Consulate's Angelo Zilio Grandi to form the Telettrofono Company around his invention, but he lacked the funds to renew the patent caveat he had filed and never completed a full patent. In 2002, on the initiative of US Representative Vito Fossella, the US House of Representatives passed House Resolution 269, stating that the life and achievements of Antonio Meucci should be recognized and his work in the invention of the telephone should be acknowledged. The resolution is a statement of historical recognition; it did not reopen or disturb Bell's legal patent, which stands as the instrument that actually secured telephone rights.
