The steam engine converts the heat of burning fuel into continuous mechanical motion, first by boiling water into steam and using its pressure to drive a piston. Thomas Newcomen built the first commercially successful steam engine in 1712, an atmospheric engine used to pump water out of mines, and James Watt later separate condenser design dramatically improved its fuel efficiency and turned it into a general purpose power source.

On 2 July 1698 Savery patented a steam-powered pump, which he called: A new invention for raiseing of water and occasioning motion to all sorts of mill work by the impellent force of fire, which will be of great use and advantage for drayning mines, serveing townes with water, and for the working of all sorts of mills where they have not the benefitt of water nor constant windes.
