A telescope is a device used to observe distant objects by their emission, absorption, or reflection of electromagnetic radiation. The earliest existing record of a telescope is a 1608 patent submitted to the government in the Netherlands by Middelburg spectacle maker Hans Lipperhey for a refracting telescope.
