Marine engineering is the engineering of watercraft, ocean systems and ocean structures, applying mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer engineering to the design, development, operation and maintenance of propulsion plants, machinery, piping, and automation and control systems for vessels of any kind, as well as coastal and offshore structures. Archimedes is traditionally credited as its first practitioner in antiquity, and Robert Fulton's 1807 demonstration of a steam-powered vessel is traditionally regarded as the start of the modern profession.

Facts
Core Concern
Designing, building and maintaining the propulsion, machinery, piping and control systems of watercraft, together with coastal and offshore structures, so they function reliably at sea. 1
Core Principle
A vessel or offshore structure is engineered as one integrated system of propulsion, machinery and structure operating continuously in the marine environment, drawing together mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer engineering rather than treating them as separate problems. 1
Disputed
Origin Year
1807 1
1807 is the traditionally cited start of the modern profession, Robert Fulton's steam-powered vessel demonstration; the same source also dates the broader discipline to the early Industrial Revolution (early 1700s), and credits Archimedes as its first practitioner in antiquity, so no single origin year is agreed.
