Karl Benz was a German engineer who filed a patent for his Benz Patent-Motorwagen on January 29, 1886, a three-wheeled vehicle with its internal combustion engine designed into the chassis from the start rather than fitted to an existing carriage. The patent, German Patent No. 37435, is conventionally treated as the birth certificate of the automobile.
