John Logie Baird was a Scottish engineer who gave the first public demonstration of a working television system in January 1926, using a mechanical scanning disc rather than an electronic sensor. His company sold television receivers commercially in the early 1930s, but the mechanical approach was superseded by Farnsworth's and Zworykin's electronic systems by the late 1930s.
